Peer Tutor Scholars

Academic Year 2001


The following students are the recipients of the Zitrin Foundation Scholarships for the academic year 2001. The students were selected on the basis of their outstanding academic achievements and leadership qualities. This scholarship was made available to students and awarded to Student Support Services Program students.

Mariam Akbari

Computer Science

Mariam is a senior in computer science and was born in Bangladesh. She has a GPA of 3.36. She was in the National Dean's list in 2000-01. She is an active secretary of the Bangladesh Student Club, and is a member of the Association of Computing Machinery. She was inducted to the National Golden Key Honor Society. She has volunteered in the New York Transit Authority, in the Madina Mosque and various Islamic activities in her community. She volunteered as a rescuer for the Flood Rescue Committee in Bangladesh. She plans to complete a masters in computer science.  Member of Society of Women Engineers.  She was awarded many scholarships and honors including The National Science Foundation Scholarship, Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, Student Aid Association Scholarship.

Tanya Caines

Psychology

Tanya is a senior majoring in Psychology. She has a GPA of 3.50. Her family comes from the Island of Trinidad and Tobago. She has worked as a tutor for the Student Support Services Program for three years. She will be inducted to the National Golden Key Honor Society. She is a member of a praise-dance group called Psalms 150. She organized a choir for children within her community. She volunteers at soup kitchens and helps in the distribution of clothing to the needy. Her goal is to be a speech pathologist.
 

Henry Jimenez

Psychology

Henry comes from the Dominican Republic. He has a GPA of 3.24. He is a senior majoring in Psychology. He is a member of Dominican 2000 of CCNY. He mentors  Dominican students to adjust and adapt to CCNY. Henry's goal is to be a counselor and help immigrant students.
 

Wanmei Ou

Electrical Engineering

Wanmei was born in China. She is an Electrical Engineering major. She is a junior with a GPA of 4.0. She received the outstanding award from Mathematics Department two times. Wanmei was recently inducted into the Golden Key Honor Society. She likes to sing and dance to make others happy. At the age of thirteen, she visited a poor village in China and found that the people lived without electricity. She chose  electrical engineering as a major because her goal is to build power plants in poor districts to bring light and hope to the poor. 
 

Hernan Rengifo 

Chemical Engineering

Hernan was born in Columbia. He is a junior in Chemical Engineering, with a GPA of 3.582. He came to this country in search of a dream but with very low finances. His family barely speaks English. He was inducted to the National Golden Key Honor Society. He received the Outstanding Acdemic Achievement Award from the SSS Progam. He tutors in  SSSP. During his free time he mentors and tutors friends and high school students voluntarily. His goal is to complete a Ph.D. in Chemistry.
