The City College of New York is proud to be an educational institution that welcomes and supports a diverse student body. The City College of New York is committed to providing a supportive environment for students with disabilities; therefore, the Office of Student Disability Services (SDS) provides support services, reasonable accommodations and academic adjustments to students with disabilities. Supporting the academic efforts of students with disabilities is the primary goal of the services and programs provided by SDS. This student handbook explains some of the policies and procedures for accessing the services and accommodations provided by SDS. It is our hope that the information provided is comprehensive and addresses your needs. Should you have a special concern that is not covered in this publication, please feel free to contact SDS for further assistance. Early planning is essential for many of the resources and accommodations provided; we ask that you contact the Office of Student Disability Services at the earliest possible date, in order for us to assist you with your needs.
Services vary according to the different type and level of disability experienced by each student. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, require that individuals with disabilities not be subjected to discrimination. Academic accommodations and policy modifications are provided only if not having the accommodation would result in discrimination. Academic accommodations are not provided simply because a person has a disability. The purpose of accommodations and modifications is to assure that there is equal access to programs and services and to the opportunity to succeed academically, rather than to guarantee that students are academically successful.
