Frequently Asked Questions

Immunization
Q: What vaccines am I required to show proof of if I want to register at the City College?

A: All students registering for six or more credits at the City College must provide proof of immunity to Measles, Mumps and Rubella. You must show proof of two (2) Measles, one (1) Mumps and one (1) Rubella. The measles vaccines must be given after the first birthday and the second at least one month apart. Any vaccines given prior to 1968 must be clearly identified as being live vaccines.

Q: How do I show proof that I have had these immunizations?

A: You may submit a copy of your original immunization card, if you don't have one you may contact your high school, or previous college (if applicable) and request a copy of your immunization record. Another option is asking your health practitioner, if he/she has copies of your immunization history. If such proof is not attainable, then you may request to have a blood test called a titer. This test will show if you are immune to measles, mumps and rubella. This test can only be done through your health practitioner. For the students who have their private health practitioners, please stop by the WCC Office at room J-15 and  ask for the "Immunization form" and have your practitioner complete it. You can also print out the form and its instructions from this page. Make sure your practitioner's name, telephone number, and address are clear.

Q: Where can I get these vaccines free of charge?

A: For your convenience the WCC offers free vaccines during registration. You may call (212) 650-8222 for more information. The Department of Health also offers shots free of charge to all college students. The clinic address and schedules is as follows:
Brooklyn, New York

Between: Willoughby St and Albee Square
Subway R, D, M, N to
Dekalb Avenue
Monday and Friday 8:30am to 2:30pm

Counseling
Q: I am having difficulty concentrating at school because so much is going on in my personal life. Where do I go to get help with my personal problems?

A: Trained counselors and psychotherapists can assist you in defining your personal difficulties and provide immediate sessions.
It is also possible to refer you to an affiliated psychotherapist on campus or in the community. It is helpful to schedule an appointment. Please call (212) 650-8222.

Q: How do I schedule an appointment for counseling or medical evaluation?

A: Call (212) 650-8222 and request an appointment with a counselor.

Q: Do I have to pay for the counseling sessions?

A: If you are a registered student at CCNY short-term counseling services at WCC are free of charge.

Q: How do I know where I should go for counseling? I know I need to see someone regularly.

A: We recommend you schedule an appointment with a counselor to find out how best you can be served.

Q: Once I start, will I have to be in Counseling for many years or what ?

A: The length of time one works with a counselor varies enormously.
The WCC practices crisis intervention which usually lasts for 8 weeks. After this time you and the therapist assess if you should continue or terminate counseling. If you feel that at any time your best interests are not being served or if you simply decide it is time to take a break, please discuss this with your counselor. You are the one who makes the final decision to continue or terminate counseling. Hopefully you will feel comfortable discussing your feelings with the counselor, in order to bring "closure" to the time you've spent together. However, your first responsibility is to yourself.
