Classical Vocal Studies
The CollegeThe City College of New York (CCNY) is the original component of the City University of New York (CUNY). We are located in Hamilton Heights in Manhattan's Upper West Side at 138th Street & Convent Avenue. The campus is conveniently accessible via several subway and bus lines. The Music Department is housed in historic Shepard Hall. CCNY tuition is most reasonable in these days of escalating college costs.
The DegreeThe select Bachelor of Fine Arts in Classical Vocal Performance program offers an emphasis in concert, chamber music and recital singing, and offers a variety of performing experiences. There is additionally an option to become certified to teach music K-12 by completing the education minor. The vocal specialization is backed by a solid core of liberal arts courses, as well as music theory, musicianship, and music history classes.
The Vocal Department
At CCNY you can study within a small voice department with an excellent resident teaching faculty who have extensive international performing experience in opera, concert, oratorio, recital and contemporary repertoire. You are guaranteed plenty of personal attention from your teachers both in lessons, classes, and in private consultation.
The Classical Vocal Studies program offers numerous performance possibilities via recitals, chamber music and choral concerts both on campus in our 110-seat Recital Hall, the Great Hall in Shepard Hall, as well as Aaron Davis Hall, which houses two theaters, as well as off campus in the many concert venues in New York City.
CCNY offers on-campus housing at The Towers dormitory. It is located at the south end of campus and is served by frequent shuttle buses. Many of our students also get together and share local housing.
Best of all you will be studying in Manhattan, perhaps the cultural capital of the world, home to the Metropolitan Opera, NY City Opera, NY Philharmonic, Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and other concert venues too numerous to mention. Countless visiting orchestras, singers, conductors and instrumentalists from all over the world visit here twelve months a year. You will be glad to know that most of these venues offer great student discounts.
