SUMMER 2017

Dates: July 3rd - 21st, 2017

The Many Shades of the Dominican Republic

This summer session course will allow students to better understand the complex relationship the DR shares with its African ancestry. Moreover, during a 3-week intensive seminar, students will share space with an array of Dominicans whose life work is to bring forth Dominican Blackness from "behind the ears" towards the center of Dominican self‐identification. Heads of NGOs, professors, activists, and governments officials will each share their views on the way the denial of Blackness leads to an array of human-‐rights violations that not only affects Haitians in Dominican Republic but dark-skinned Dominicans as well. Lastly, and most importantly, students will visit an array of historical sites that will reveal the profound role Africans, and African influences in general, have played in shaping Dominican history.
