Great Grads - Jackeline Muñiz-Marrero

BA, Sociology

Jackeline Muñiz-Marrero had an admittedly mediocre record in high school, but City College recognized her potential and admitted her through SEEK, the College's Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). That decision has paid off both for the College and for Jackeline, who graduates with a 3.6 G.P.A.

Jackeline, who is also a recipient of the SEEK 2009 Outstanding Graduate Award, will become the first member of her family to complete college. Her determination landed her acceptance into the highly selective Hunter College School of Social Work graduate program.

Along the way, she was selected for the Caucus CUNY Scholars program, which places students in internships in the district offices of state legislators, and was elected to Chi Alpha Epsilon, a national honor for students in HEOP programs.

"During my studies at CCNY as a major in Sociology coming from a working class Latino family, I have become aware of the many disparities in resources available to particular groups and just how detrimental the lack of resources is to people who would otherwise be able to excel," she says. "This has influenced me to become a licensed certified social worker."

Outside of CCNY, Jackeline advocates against domestic violence by doing community outreach with the Relationship Abuse Prevention Program (RAPP) at Martin Luther King High School. She also volunteers with several other non-profits.  A resident of Richmond Hill, she will start her graduate studies this fall.
