Special Recognition for “Exemplary and Unparalleled Service” to Abraham Tawil ’55BBA
Journalist Michael Oreskes ’75, Rhodes Scholar Lev Sviridov ’05 & CCNY Pres. Gregory Williams to speak at 153rd Annual Alum MeetingNEW YORK, June 2, 2005 — In recognition of his over 50 years of service to CCNY, retired Math educator and university administrator Bernard Sohmer will receive the 2005 Faculty Service Award from the Alumni Association of The City College of New York at its 153rd Annual Meeting, Thursday, June 9, in the Great Hall.
City College President Dr. Gregory H. Williams and distinguished alumni, Michael Oreskes ’75, the recently appointed Executive Editor of the Paris-based International Herald Tribune, and Lev Sviridov ’05, CCNY’s first Rhodes Scholar since 1939, will be the guest speakers at the meeting, which starts at 7 p.m.
Special recognition will go to Abraham Tawil ’55BBA, the Association’s long-serving treasurer, for exemplary and unparalleled service. In addition, Alumni Service Awards for outstanding service to the College and Association will be presented to:
Charles DeCicco ’67 – Alumni Association 1st Vice President and board member; member John H. Finley Nominating Committee and Communications Alumni boards, editor Alumnus magazine.
Lillian Phillips '77N – Vice President Nursing Alumni Group, former Assistant Treasurer, Black Alumni Group.
Francis Redhead ’87ME – Former Class ‘A’ and Class ‘C’ Director Alumni Association Board, ex-President and board member, Engineering School Alumni.
Mary Cathryn Roth ’96MFA – Past President Art Alumni Association, Program Coordinator/Liaison Alumni Association.
Harold Schneider ’49EE – Former President, Southern California Chapter.
Dr. Sohmer’s distinguished service to City College spanned over 50 years. A graduate of New York University (BA 1949, MS 1951, Ph.D. 1959), he joined the faculty of the Mathematics Department in 1952 and retired last year as Chair of the Faculty Senate.
In addition to his teaching career, Dr. Sohmer was a well respected administrator at both CCNY and The City University of New York. He served as Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dean of Students and as Vice Provost for Student Affairs at CCNY. At CUNY, he was elected twice to the Chair of the University Faculty Senate – on whose Executive Committee he sat -- and was an ex officio member of the CUNY Board of Trustees. From 1988 to 2001, Dr. Sohmer was President of the City College Hillel.
