NEW YORK, June 4, 2007 -- In recognition of her nearly 25 years of service to CCNY as a mentor and researcher, Dr. Valerie Balogh-Nair, Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, will receive the 2007 Faculty Service Award from the Alumni Association of The City College of New York at its 155th Annual Meeting, Thursday, June 7, in the Great Hall of The City College.

City College President Dr. Gregory H. Williams and distinguished alumna, Linda Kaplan Thaler ’72, ’75MM, president of The Kaplan Thaler Group, the fastest growing advertising firm on the East Coast, will be the guest speakers at the meeting, which starts at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Williams will review another successful year at CCNY. Ms. Kaplan Thaler’s topic will be “The Power of Nice,” based on her best-selling book of the same title.

In addition, Alumni Service Awards for outstanding service to the College and Association will be presented to:

Dr. Balogh-Nair’s distinguished service to City College began in 1984 when the Hungarian-born scientist joined the institution from Columbia University. Educated at the University of Louvain in Belgium, where she earned her B.Sc. degree and Ph.D., Dr. Balogh-Nair has reveled in teaching and conducting research with both undergraduate and graduate students.

She has employed innovative teaching methods in chemistry and its related fields to attract many top students and others with the potential for achievement. Her protégés over the years have produced brilliant research papers, earned prestigious fellowships and prizes, and graduated with honors. Many of them have become highly successful scientists and teachers in their own right.

Dr. Balogh-Nair’s scholarship and professional research has been equally distinguished. Spanning diverse areas of chemistry such as photochemistry, polymer synthesis, organic synthesis, chemistry of vision, and leading to antifungal and anti-HIV drugs, her research has earned her numerous grants and awards. She has been honored by such organizations as the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense and The Petroleum Fund of the American Chemical Society.

Her current interests include synthesis of multivalent and multitasking nanoscale materials designed for drug development and delivery, and design and synthesis of multitasking photonic molecules to detect and prevent breast and prostate cancer micrometastases.

In addition, Dr. Balogh-Nair has had more than 80 papers published in top scientific journals. She also has been invited to deliver more than 30 lectures worldwide.

The Alumni Association meeting, which is open to all City College alumni, will be preceded by a buffet dinner at 5:30 p.m. in the Great Hall. Tickets are $35 per person for the dinner.
