CCNY Summer Programs Inspire City HS Students
Two summers ago, Philomina Kane, 16, and the daughter of Ghanaian immigrants, was one of seven participants in The City College of New York’s annual IUSL Photonics Training Program. The program offers high school students an opportunity for applied research in photonic science and technology. This fall, Ms. Kane enters Princeton University grateful to her CCNY experience for setting her on a path that she hopes will lead to a career in biomedical engineering.

Michael Sorkin Receives Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award
Michael Sorkin, distinguished professor of architecture and director of the graduate urban design program at The City College of New York’s Spitzer School of Architecture, has won a 2013 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award. Professor Sorkin was selected in the Design Mind category, which recognizes “a visionary, such as an educator, author, critic, curator, or designer, who has had a profound impact on design theory, practice, or public awareness.”

Designers Present ‘Beyond Waterproofing’ Concepts May 10

Marshall Berman to Present Lewis Mumford Lecture May 2
City College turns to one of its own to present the Ninth Annual Lewis Mumford Lecture on Urbanism: Distinguished Professor of Political Science Marshall Berman, who will speak 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 2, in The Great Hall, Shepard Hall. His topic will be “Emerging From the Ruins.” The talk is free and open to the public.

“Waterproofing New York’ Conference Rescheduled to March 2
“Waterproofing New York,” a daylong conference to explore the impact of past and future storms on five key infrastructure systems: water/waste, power/data, circulation/fuel, parks and recreation, and shelter, has been rescheduled to Saturday March 2, conference organizers with City College’s Spitzer School of Architecture announced. The event, originally scheduled for February 9, was postponed due to City College being closed for a snowstorm.

Travel Grants Send Spitzer Students to Far Corners of Globe
How did the spice trade influence architecture on two continents? That question led Lori Beppu, a graduate architect student in The City College of New York’s Spitzer School of Architecture, to travel to Sri Lanka and the Netherlands last year to search for answers, supported by a $5,000 travel fellowship from the Spitzer School.
