Professor Birman To Receive Sakharov Prize For Human Rights
For about 35 years, Dr. Joseph L. Birman, ’47, Distinguished Professor of Physics at The City College of New York (CCNY) has advocated for the rights of repressed scientists, first in the former Soviet Union and later in China, Cuba, Iraq, Iran and the United States. Now he is to be honored for “his tireless and effective personal leadership in defense of human rights of scientists throughout the world” as one of three recipients of the American Physical Society’s (APS) Andrei Sakharov Prize for 2010.

U.S. Debut Set for Professor Krakowski’s “Looking for Palladin”

DORIS CINTRON Named Acting Dean Of CCNY School Of Education
NEW YORK, July 10, 2009 – Dr. Doris Cintron has been appointed Acting Dean of City College’s School of Education. She will hold that position, which she assumed June 1, while the College conducts a search for a permanent successor to Dr. Alfred Posamentier, who has retired. Dean Cintron had been Assistant Dean of Education since 1998.

CCNY M.F.A. Grad Jeremy Joffee Wins Silver Medal In 36TH Annual Student Academy Awards
NEW YORK, June 18, 2009 – Jeremy Joffee, a 2008 graduate of the M.F.A. program in Media Arts Production at The City College of New York (CCNY), received the Silver Medal in the 36th Annual Student Academy Awards for his thesis film “The Bronx Balletomane.” The award was announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences at a ceremony Saturday, June 13, in Beverly Hills, Calif.

CCNY Studio Art Graduate Kyle Meyer Named 2009 Hays-Brandeis Fellow
NEW YORK, June 1, 2009 -- Kyle Meyer, a recent graduate of The City College of New York’s (CCNY) Art Program, is a 2009 winner of the Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowship. He plans to use the Fellowship, which carries a $19,000 stipend, to travel to Swaziland this fall to document communities affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic there.
