CCNY Professor Challenges Designers to Focus on Suburbia
In 2010, June Williamson, associate professor of architecture at The City College of New York’s Spitzer School of Architecture, organized and ran a design competition for the Long Island Index, a not-for-profit that conducts research on regional issues. Ideas from that contest, which challenged entrants to creatively retrofit Long Island’s existing downtown areas, provide the foundation for her new book, “Designing Suburban Futures: New Models from Build a Better Burb.”

Poetry Outreach Conference for Teachers Slated for June 8
The First Annual Poetry Outreach Conference, sponsored by The City College of New York School of Education and CCNY’s Poetry Outreach Center, will be held 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 8, in the City College Faculty Dining Room, third floor, North Academic Center, on the CCNY campus. Michael Sorkin Receives Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award
Michael Sorkin, distinguished professor of architecture and director of the graduate urban design program at The City College of New York’s Spitzer School of Architecture, has won a 2013 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award. Professor Sorkin was selected in the Design Mind category, which recognizes “a visionary, such as an educator, author, critic, curator, or designer, who has had a profound impact on design theory, practice, or public awareness.”

Education Professor’s Film Tells Undocumented Students’ Stories
“I was five months old when I came to this country, but those five months make all the difference in the world.” That statement by Arline, an undocumented immigrant and City College of New York undergraduate, opens “Living Undocumented: High School, College and Beyond,” a 17-minute film by CCNY Associate Professor of Education Tatyana Kleyn and Ben Donnellon.

CCNY Professor’s Film On Hans Richter To Premiere May 5 In LA
“HANS RICHTER: Everything Turns – Everything Revolves,” a documentary by City College of New York Professor of Film Dave Davidson about the pioneering filmmaker, will have its premiere 1 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles. Richter, who was a major force in redefining art and film in the 20th century, was also director of CCNY’s Institute of Film Techniques – the first documentary film school in the United States – from 1941 to 1957.

NASA Radar Mapping Mission Blankets The Americas
An aircraft-mounted, multipurpose NASA radar system has just returned loaded with data from a month-long trek over rainforests, plateaus, swamps and fault lines of South America. This forms part of an ambitious mission to study wetlands, agriculture, climate and biogeography across broad swaths of the United States and nine other countries pairing high-resolution radar imaging with ground data.

CCNY Historian Judith Stein Awarded CUNY Distinguished Fellowship
City College of New York historian Dr. Judith Stein is doubly distinguished. Professor Stein, who earlier this year became a CUNY Distinguished Professor, has been awarded a CUNY Distinguished Fellowship for the spring 2014 semester from the Advanced Research Collaborative (ARC) of the Graduate Center (GC) of the City University of New York. She one of 15 “exceptional national and international scholars” selected for the inaugural cohort of this GC initiative.
