CCNY Biologist Finalist for Blavatnik Young Scientist Awards
The New York Academy of Sciences Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists acknowledge and celebrate the excellence of the most noteworthy young scientists and engineers in the tri-state New York metropolitan region. This year, a member of The City College of New York faculty, Associate Professor of Biology Robert P. Anderson, was chosen as a finalist in the competition.

Academics Weigh New Field of Study on ‘Spanish Caribbean’
After close to a year of groundwork, nearly 100 academics representing some 50 institutions from around the world will gather July 25 - 27 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, for an academic conference titled “The Spanish Caribbean: Toward a Field of its Own.” The scholars will discuss the creation of a new field of graduate-level study focused on Cuba, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico plus émigré populations who trace their ancestry to these lands.

Dominicans In U.S. Subject of Special Issue of Journal ‘Camino Real’
“Camino Real,” the journal of the Instituto Franklin of the University of Alcalá, Spain, has published a special issue devoted to Dominican studies, a growing field in the United States focused on the study of people of Dominican ancestry. This is the first time a multidisciplinary academic journal has published an entire issue devoted to the field. Dr. Ramona Hernández, director of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (CUNY DSI), based at The City College of New York, and Anthony Stevens-Acevedo, CUNY DSI assistant director, edited the issue.

Dr. Maurizio Trevisan, MD, Named Dean of Sophie Davis School
City College of New York President Lisa Staiano-Coico has announced that Dr. Maurizio Trevisan, MD, has accepted an offer to become dean of the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at CCNY. Dr. Trevisan, whose appointment is subject to the approval of the CUNY Board of Trustees, is currently executive vice chancellor and chief executive officer, Health Sciences System, Nevada System of Higher Education. If approved, he will assume his new position August 1.

Professor Tedesco Tracks Life and Death of Greenland Glacial Lake

CCNY-Led Team Gets $3M for Northeast Earth System Model
An interdisciplinary team of researchers led by Dr. Charles Vörösmarty, professor of civil engineering in the Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New York, was awarded $3 million from the National Science Foundation to develop a regional earth system model of the Northeast. The effort involves partner institutions from around the region, including Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Mass.

Conference to Honor Professor Catherine Fosnot
Shortly after she joined the faculty of The City College of New York School of Education, Dr. Catherine Fosnot established the Mathematics in the City (MitC) center at CCNY in collaboration with the Freudenthal Institute at University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. Under her leadership, MitC became a national center for professional development in K-8 math education, with support from the National Science Foundation, ExxonMobil Foundation and the New York City Department of Education.

CCNY Music Professor Jon Pieslak Named Guggenheim Fellow
Dr. Jonathan Pieslak, associate professor of music at The City College of New York, is one of 180 scholars, artists, and scientists from the United States and Canada awarded Guggenheim Fellowships for 2011. His project, a study of the music of indoctrination and propaganda in extremist cultures, was chosen from among nearly 3,000 applicants.

Michio Kaku to Deliver Samuel Rudin Lecture May 16
Dr. Michio Kaku, Henry Semat Chair and Professor of Theoretical Physics at The City College of New York, has been in great demand around the country to speak on his best-selling book, “Physics of the Future.” He will have home court advantage, however, when he presents the Samuel Rudin Distinguished Visiting Scholars Lecture 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 16 in the Great Hall of Shepard Hall on the CCNY campus, 160 Convent Avenue, New York. Engineering Societies Honor Two Grove School Professors
Two professors in the Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New York have been elected to top honors in their respective fields. Dr. Robert E. Paaswell, Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering, has been elected a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Dr. Mitchell B. Schaffler, Wallace Coulter and Presidential Professor of Biomedical Engineering, has been elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows.
