  • CCNY RECEIVES FIVE-YEAR $2.2 MILLION FEDERAL GRANT FOR DRUG ABUSE RESEARCH AND TRAINING OF MINORITY RESEARCHERS

    NEW YORK, June 22, 2005 – A highly memorable anti-drug commercial used fried eggs to depict “your brain on drugs.”  Researchers at The City College of New York plan to use a new, five-year, $2.2 million grant to study the brain’s biochemistry to learn how prenatal exposure to cocaine and other illegal stimulants causes its damage.

  • NEW SATELLITE DATA MINING AND PROCESSING FACILITY TO MAKE CCNY A REMOTE SENSING ‘CENTER OF EXCELLENCE’

    NEW YORK – June 20, 2005 – A data archiving, mining and processing station that will collect and analyze data from both geo-stationary and polar orbiting satellites will be built at The City College of New York (CCNY).  When the station goes live, CCNY will become one of only a select few U.S. academic institutions receiving and processing data directly from all major federal government weather and environmental monitoring satellites.  It will support CCNY researchers in projects ranging from land use analyses to precipitation forecasts to studying linkages between climate changes and air quality.

      PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

    NEW YORK, June 14, 2005 – Twenty-five students from public and private high schools in New York City will receive a stimulating introduction to the transportation industry at The City College of New York’s annual Summer Transportation Institute (STI).  The four-week program, organized by CCNY-based CUNY Institute for Transportation Systems (ITS), begins at Tuesday, July 5 and runs through July 30.

    NEW YORK, June 2, 2005 -- Hyesin (Joy) Kang, a Korean immigrant led to medicine by the death of her infant brother, and Luz E. Liriano, an asthmatic from the Dominican Republic whose ailment inspired her to become a physician, are City College’s 2005 Jonas E. Salk Scholarship recipients. Each will receive a $6,000 stipend for medical school.
