President Coico Selected as Outstanding Educator of the Year

Dr. Lisa S. Coico, president of The City College of New York

Dr. Lisa S. Coico, president of The City College of New York, has been selected as an Outstanding Educator of the Year by the award-winning publication Education Update. This prestigious honor is given to education leaders who have embodied strong leadership in enhancing the quality of education at their institutions and an unflagging dedication to the advancement of all students in attendance. The award presentation will take place June 24 at the Harvard Club in New York.

“Dr. Coico has led a resurgence in academic excellence, student engagement and faculty enhancement at City College for the benefit of its diverse student population,” said Dr. Pola Rosen, publisher of Education Update. “Drawing upon her vast experience and embracing the input of students, staff, faculty, alumni and community leaders, she is implementing a comprehensive program to set City College’s course for the 21st century.”

Since joining City College in 2010, Dr. Coico has led an unprecedented campaign of expansion, growth and improvement at CCNY. An alumna of Brooklyn College, Dr. Coico is the first CUNY graduate to lead CCNY, which was established in 1847 and is the first public urban college in the United States.

“This is a wonderful honor that is a tribute to the entire college community,” said President Coico. “This award reflects the achievements of our hard-working student body and the excellence of our faculty and staff.”

Education Update has presented the Outstanding Educator awards since 2002. Deans, college presidents, former commissioners of education and other luminaries comprise an advisory council that selects the recipients. Other award winners this year are Dr. Susan Fuhrman, president of Teachers College, and Dr. Mary Brabeck, Gale and Ira Drukier Dean of New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development.
