    Dr. Ali examines how apolipoproteins modulate blood cholesterol levels. High density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels are inversely correlated to the incidence of cardiovascular diseases.  Apolipoprotein D (apoD) is a minor lipoprotein associated with HDL cholesterol.  The Ali laboratory uses mice and cell culture studies to determine whether apoD plays a role in the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in blood vessels or modulation of plasma cholesterol levels by decreasing the levels of oxidative stress or inflammation in blood vessels.

  • Research Interests

    Kamilah Ali is investigating the role of apolipoprotein D in the development of atherosclerosis via oxidative stress signaling pathways and the modulation of HDL cholesterol.  Her laboratory utilizes mouse models to assess lesion formation in the aorta and cell culture systems to determine molecular mechanism(s).  In addition, other research projects will determine the role of apolipoprotein D in the context of neurological disorders and cancer.
