Professor Garavuso has been a classroom teacher, a director of child care centers and nursery schools, and has taught education courses at Teachers College and CUNY. She also conducts workshops for teachers and parents of young children on various topics including how to cultivate children’s mathematical thinking and emergent literacy in pre-school settings. She has taught supervisory methods to child care and nursery directors at CUNY’s School of Professional Development, and is the principal organizer for CWE’s ongoing workshop series with the Executive Leadership Institute serving NYC public daycare directors.
About her work at the Center, Vicki says that she is interested in "growing” educators and caregivers who appreciate children’s capacities for learning in supportive, respectful and uninhibited settings. Her book, Being mentored: Getting what you need (2010) is aimed at helping novice early childhood educators recognize and benefit from a variety of mentored relationships in academic as well as work settings.
She is a member of the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators and an editorial board member of their journal. Her research interests include early childhood curriculum and instruction, leadership and supervision in early care and education settings, and the development of cultural critical awareness in teachers and leaders who may themselves be from underserved populations.
