The Rifkind Center for the Humanities and Arts

News and Events

For more than twenty years the Rifkind Center has enriched curricula, scholarship, creativity, teaching, and learning in the Humanities and Arts at City College by supporting a diverse annual roster of awards, workshops, readings, film screenings, lectures, seminars, and special events.

Many activities are annual:  research-support awards for faculty and conference-travel awards for students; teacher-orientation workshops in fall and spring for new instructors; partial subsidies for various festivals and literary journals; and a Film Thursdays series in which award-winning films are screened for students in tandem with presentations by their writers or directors.

As part of an ongoing thematic focus on writers and writing, the Center hosts professional development workshops throughout the year on such topics as pursuing advanced degrees in preparation for careers in teaching; working with agents, editors, publishers, and filmmakers; adapting to and capitalizing on new technologies such as on-line authorship and print-on-demand publishing; and applying for and taking advantage of residential writing retreats.

Among the two dozen Rifkind Center speakers at The College in 2010-11 were New York Times writers Jane Brody and Cynthia Zarin, Princeton professor emerita Elaine Showalter, Guggenheim fellow and National Book Award nominee Mary Gaitskill, Pulitzer Prize winning historian Steven Hahn, CCNY physicist Michio Kaku, and former New York governor Eliot Spitzer.

We are currently finalizing plans to bring the writer Sapphire (Precious) to the College for a fall signature event.  Negotiations are also underway with an equally exciting speaker for a spring signature event.  Our fall-semester film series will showcase leading ladies of the 20th century cinema, from Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe to Annette Bening and Keira Knightly.
