GREENPROOFING.ORG is the Environmental Engineering and Entrepreneurship Program at The City College of New York, an interdisciplinary program of the departments of Civil Engineering and Economics & Management, started with funding from EPP at NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The people of GREENPROOFING.ORG are students, alumni, and faculty at The City College of New York: engineers and entrepreneurs learning from each other.

We define environmental entrepreneurship as the practice of creating a healthier environment by making wise business choices.

We support the establishment of profit or capital endeavors that focus on enhancing the environment through all or most of their activities, directly or indirectly. This can be done by 1) recognizing problems that face our environment, improving or creating innovative ideas that address these problems, and building successful business ventures to realize these ideas; or 2) integrating environmental concerns into any business plan. We believe that the process of minimizing pollution and protecting ecosystems starts with individual awareness.

The primary objective of the Environmental Engineering Entrepreneurship Program at The City College of New York is to support the development of environmentally-conscious engineers and entrepreneurs of the future. We are students and faculty, half in the economics department, half in the school of engineering. We are focused on the environmental health of marine systems, especially the NY/NJ Harbor Estuary which surrounds New York City.

Our goals include:

  • Getting students informed and involved in environmental issues.
  • Learning the steps to financing a business venture.
  • Fusing ideas from Civil Engineering with ideas from Economics to come up with possible solutions for restoring marine life.
  • Making intelligent critiques of the standards put forth by the EPA and other agencies and suggesting economically sound ways of improvement.
  • Encouraging interactions between knowledgeable students and faculty
  • Sharing what we have learned with others (who might not know the dangers that are lurking in our water ways).
  • Reaching out to high school students and getting them accustomed to making wise environmental decisions.

All in all, the main purpose is to educate in hopes of improving our current state. We hope to educate not only ourselves in the group, but also those in our community on the issues we are facing in the Hudson River and other environmental concerns. It is also our goal to examine, through research, what is being done to appease these issues and either extend them or initiate new projects that would further benefit the community.

To this end, we are:
