Profile

Agnese Codebò is Associate Professor of Latin American Cultural and Urban Studies in the Department of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences of City College of the City University of New York (CUNY). From 2017 to 2026 she was Associate Professor in the Spanish Department at Villanova University. Her research focuses on cultural representations of marginality in Latin America, spatial justice, and the environmental humanities. Her book, The Slum and the City: Culture and Dissidence in the Villas Miseria of Buenos Aires (Pittsburgh UP, 2024), winner of the The Modern Language Association's Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize, investigates how slums have produced culture, as well as their representation in literature and the visual arts from the 1950s to the present. She is also the author of Humor contro Videla. L'opposizione alla dittatura attraverso la satira, il fumetto e la caricatura (Puntoacapo, 2022) where she examines how the magazine "Humor" managed to promote counter information and create a space in which it was possible to exercise freedom of opinion during the military dictatorship in Argentina, while analyzing how it managed to evade the regime's intransigent censorship. She is currently working on an environmental humanities project, tentatively titled Epistemologies of Waste in Latin American Art and Literature.
