Ph.D. Admission Requirements

Applicants must have received a bachelor's degree from a college or university of accredited standing, in a branch of engineering or science appropriate to the study of biomedical engineering. The applicant's academic record must demonstrate the promise of superior performance in advanced study and research, as evidenced by a strong undergraduate record, strong letters of recommendation, and a focused statement of purpose that explains why the applicant wants to pursue a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering.

The general Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required. Due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, GRE scores are NOT required for admission. We strongly recommend you submit score reports if you have taken the GRE and admissions committees may request additional information or interviews as an alternative means of evaluating applicants’ qualifications. Applicants from countries where English is not the primary language must also take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). While there are no minimum scores for the GRE or TOEFL, it is expected that the scores demonstrate aptitude for graduate research.

For entry into the Ph.D. program, courses normally taken as an undergraduate in biomedical engineering should have been completed (see the list of courses below).

Students applying to the Ph.D. program with a master's degree may transfer up to 30 credits if the coursework is similar to the courses in the CCNY biomedical engineering Ph.D. program.

For more information related to the admissions process, please see the BME Ph.D. Admissions Frequently Asked Questions.
