1. Why is the CCNY Supra 55 SEM Core Facility unavailable?

The Supra 55 instrument has experienced a defect. Due to the instrument's age and challenges in sourcing replacement parts, repairs are expected to take significant time. CCNY is exploring options to upgrade the system, but this process will also require time.

2. What is the arrangement with the ASRC?

Starting January 1, 2026, the CCNY Office of Research will partner with the Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) to provide subsidized access to its Quattro ESEM for CCNY-affiliated users. This initiative ensures that research continues uninterrupted during the Supra 55 downtime.

3. Who is eligible to use the ASRC Quattro ESEM under this agreement?

All CCNY Principal Investigators (PIs), researchers, and students authorized to use the Supra 55 Core Facility are eligible. You can verify your eligibility by contacting the Office of Research at corelabs@ccny.cuny.edu

4. What is the cost of using the ASRC Quattro ESEM?

CCNY users will pay a subsidized rate of $26 per hour, equivalent to the standard rate for the Supra 55 system at CCNY. Non-CCNY users are subject to ASRC’s standard rates.

5. Is training required to use the ASRC Quattro ESEM?

If you are already trained on the CCNY Supra 55, you may require a brief orientation to the ASRC Quattro ESEM due to differences in operation. Contact the ASRC facility staff to confirm your training status or schedule an orientation session. New users must complete ASRC’s mandatory Quattro ESEM training.

6. Where is the ASRC facility located, and how do I access it?

The ASRC is located at 85 St. Nicholas Terrace, New York, NY 10031. CCNY users can access the facility during regular operating hours. More information is available on the ASRC website

7. Can I use the ASRC Quattro ESEM for the same types of experiments as the Supra 55?

The ASRC Quattro ESEM supports similar applications, including imaging and analysis of biological, materials, and environmental samples. However, there may be differences in resolution, sample preparation requirements, or available modes. Notably, Quattro ESEM does not include EDS capabilities. Consult with ASRC staff to confirm compatibility with your specific research needs.

8. How will billing be handled?

Invoices will be sent by the ASRC and will only include the subsidized rate. The subsidies will be managed internally between the ASRC and CCNY.

9. What happens if the ASRC Quattro ESEM is fully booked?

ASRC operates on a first-come, first-served booking system. To ensure access, book your time slot as early as possible. If the Quattro ESEM is unavailable, contact the CCNY Office of Research to explore alternative arrangements, such as access to other regional facilities.

10. What if I encounter technical issues with the ASRC Quattro ESEM?

Report any technical issues to the ASRC facility staff immediately. For billing or access issues related to the CCNY subsidy, contact the CCNY Office of Research at corelabs@ccny.cuny.edu

11. What if I need additional support for my research during this period?

The CCNY Office of Research is committed to assisting you in finding alternative solutions. We can identify other facilities that may be suitable for your needs or provide limited support through the assistance of the CCNY SEM facility manager. Please contact us at corelabs@ccny.cuny.edu to discuss your requirements.

12. How long will the CCNY SEM Core Facility be unavailable?

While we cannot provide an exact timeline, repairs or upgrades are expected to take several months due to part availability and the procurement process for a new system. Updates will be posted on the CCNY Office of Research website www.ccny.cuny.edu/corefacilities

For additional questions or concerns, please contact the CCNY Office of Research at corelabs@ccny.cuny.edu (212) 650 8596. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this transition.
