About the English Language Institute (ELI)

The English Language Institute (ELI) at The City College of New York (CCNY) prepares international professionals and students for the challenges of American colleges, universities, and business.

Founded in 1847, The City College of New York (CCNY) is the oldest public higher-education institution in New York City. It is the flagship of The City University of New York (CUNY), and is ranked in the top 20 public colleges in the United States. City College also has New York City’s only public engineering and architecture schools. City College offers more than 60 undergraduate and graduate majors with award-winning faculty.
The City College campus is located on 36 acres (14 hectares) in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan. Our neighborhood is filled with rich historical, cultural, and artistic diversity. Harlem is home to world-famous landmarks, civil rights movements, prolific artists, dining destinations and more.

Faculty & Staff

All members of ELI faculty have Master degrees in Applied Linguistics or Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL). Our teachers use communicative language teaching approaches, incorporate technology, and provide individualized attention. Classes are small and encourage student participation.

Classes and Programs

ELI offers a variety of programs and classes for full-time and part-time students. We offer 5 levels of instruction, from Elementary to Advanced. Students take a placement test and attend orientation before classes begin.

Grades, Levels, & Certificates

All students are assessed at the beginning of their program and placed into the appropriate level. Teachers give personal attention to each student and evaluate individual progress. At the end of each semester, students who meet the necessary requirements will be considered for a level promotion.
A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of studies.
