ELI Faculty & Staff

At the English Language Institute (ELI), all of our faculty members have graduate degrees in Applied Linguistics or Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL). Our teachers use communicative language teaching approaches, incorporate technology, and provide individualized attention. Classes are small and encourage student participation.

Brian Carroll - Instructor

Brian Carroll has been an instructor with the English Language Institute at City College since March 2016. He holds an M.A. in Applied Linguistics, an M.Ed. in Second Language Assessment, and a B.A. in Russian Language. He is currently studying for an Ed.D. in Second Language Assessment as well. Brian is the instructor for the Elementary and Intermediate levels in Intensive English and Pre-Undergraduate/Graduate courses.

Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, it was an easy decision for me to study for my undergraduate degrees at The Ohio State University. While at OSU, I did a semester abroad at Moscow State University and quickly fell in love with Russian culture. After receiving a BA in Russian Language, I decided to relocate to St. Petersburg, Russia where I taught both introductory levels of Russian language and a wide variety of English language courses.

Five years later, I found myself ready to pursue foreign language education in an academic context and again relocated to a new city. Never having been to New York City, I was in awe at the amount of cultural, and linguistic, diversity that NYC offered. I knew this would be the perfect place to study Applied Linguistics. I have been at Teachers College, Columbia University since 2011, where I studied for an MA in Applied Linguistics, and an M. Ed. in Second Language Assessment.

Currently, I am studying for an Ed.D in Second Language Assessment. Although I spend most of my time working and studying, one of my favorite things to do in New York City is to go for long bike rides on the Riverbank Park bike path, especially at dusk in late spring – beautiful!

Amanda Meier - Program Director

Amanda Meier first joined the English Language Institute at City College as an instructor. Recently, she took on the role of Program Director. She has taught Academic English at colleges in the U.S. and China. Amanda earned her M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Teachers College, Columbia University. She holds a B.A. in International Relations and Chinese Language from the University of Colorado.
Ever since I was a kid, I loved learning languages. My mother is from Cambodia and taught me Khmer; in elementary school and high school I studied French; in college I decided to major in Chinese.

My career has been pretty diverse. After college, I worked in political consulting for 3 years. I even worked on President Obama’s first campaign in 2008! After that, I did English-Chinese translation for an international investment company. In 2011, I earned a fellowship through Stanford University to teach in China. That’s when I fell in love with teaching. After my fellowship, I returned to the U.S. and did my M.A. in TESOL at Teachers College, Columbia University. I’ve been teaching at the college level ever since.

New York City is a food lover’s paradise! One of my favorite things about this city is that I can eat different food from almost every country in the world. One night I might have Thai food, the next night Mexican, then French, Ethiopian, Japanese, Peruvian, Greek, and so on and so on!
