The CUNY School of Medicine Collaborative Pilot Research Grant
Pilot Grant Announcement
The CSOM announces the Collaborative Pilot Research Grant (CSOM-CPRG) which aims to promote
research collaborations among faculty at the CSOM and SBH campuses in order to enhance the level of
extramural funding in the following areas; community health, health services, basic or clinical
biomedical sciences, clinical & translational medicine. This one year grant will provide support
for a CSOM collaborative pilot project that has the potential to lead to federally funded (ie NIH)
and/or non-federally funded grants. Pilot studies must be submitted jointly by at least one Co-PI
from each site and must demonstrate a true collaboration. Faculty must justify how the
collaboration will strengthen the proposal and lead to innovation and advances in the field. This
grant is for new pilot projects not for continuing support on existing projects.
Eligibility: Only pilot projects that demonstrate a collaboration between at least one CSOM and one
SBH faculty from the ranks of Medical Assistant Professor, Clinical Assistant Medical Professor,
Affiliate Medical Assistant Professor or above, are eligible for funding.
Funding: Funding to support collaborative projects will be up to $30,000 and will be commensurate
to the proposed study. Funding can be used to cover supplies, equipment, data collection and
analysis, salaries for staff, students, or technicians. Funding cannot be used for salaries for
Co-PIs. One grant will be awarded each year based on the quality, significance, and innovation, of
the pilot project and the likelihood that it will lead to funding by an external granting agency.
Biosketch: Biosketches of all Co-PI’s are required. Biosketches should be in the latest NIH

Abstract: Applicants must submit an abstract of 300 words or less.
Lay Summary: A lay summary of 200 words or less must be submitted.
Narrative: A five page proposal should contain the following sections: specific aims, significance,
innovation, background, research design and scientific approach, contribution to the field, and
justification of how the collaboration strengthens the proposal. Preliminary data is suggested but
not required. A list of potential funding agencies/industries and a timeline for submission must be
provided (not included in the 5 page limit). A separate citation list, not included in the 5 page
limit, should also be included.
