CUNY School of Medicine Recognizes Physicians Assistant Week
The CUNY School of Medicine PA Club recently held a series of events in recognition of Physicians Assistant Week. PA Week is an annual event that runs from October 6-12 and highlights the PA profession and its contributions to the nation’s health. During the current global pandemic, PA Week was especially significant as PAs around the world have stepped up in major ways including serving on the frontline of the COVID-19 response. During this challenging time, our own CSOM PAs have not only proven themselves flexible, adaptable, and collaborative but also essential.
CSOM PA Week 2020 kicked off with a PA Club social media takeover showing “A Day in the Life of a PA Student.” PA students filled out timelines and Instagram stories with examples of what they are facing on a daily basis. Viewers had a chance to see the health care system from our students’ perspectives while checking in on some CSOM PA alums currently on the front lines.
CSOM PA Week continued with a clothing drive with a partnership with the Bronx Tremont Salvation Army and an Instagram LIVE session with Yves Verdieu PA-C, a 2014 graduate of the CSOM program and current emergency medicine provider. The discussion and Q&A session gave viewers a chance to take a closer look at the changing role of the PA profession. The PA Club closed out PA Week 2020 with the “Why PA Celebration” with guest speaker Harry Pomeranz, MSPH, PA-C followed by the Q&A with PA-C and CSOM PA program alumnus, Carla Smith. “I am very proud of our CSOM PA students for all of their efforts during PA Week; raising awareness of our profession, our school’s mission, and serving those less fortunate in our community,” said Jaclyn N Churchill, Assistant Dean & Program Director CUNY School of Medicine Physician Assistant Program.
Locally, PA Week 2020 was an opportunity for CSOM PA program to show how its students are adapting to the changing professional climate. On a national level, PA Week continues to show that PAs are essential to healthcare and to patients. Congratulations to the CSOM PA Club on a successful showing this year.
