City College Fellow/Isaacs Scholar
Sadia Tasnim is an English Literature major, with minors in History and Studio Art, and is participating in the Publishing Design Certificate Program at CCNY. A Bengali-American Muslim, Sadia aspires to teach at the college level, curating spaces to discuss Islamophobia and xenophobia as well as celebrating diverse Muslim identities through the medium of literature. Her research interests lie in contemporary literature written by Muslims from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds that reflects the effects of Islamophobia on themselves and their communities. Sadia is also interested in the representation of Muslims, namely veiled Muslim women, in mainstream media productions. She would love to one-day compile an anthology of contemporary Muslim poetry that expresses the breadth of the ummah (the global Muslim community). In her free time, she is a self-taught artist, graphic designer, and poet who organizes interscholastic tournaments for Muslim high school students. She looks forward to creating discourses in the academic community that will actively oppose harmful ideologies about Muslims and people of color in the real world by beginning in the classroom.
