Harlem Focus

In 2014, the City College Journalism Program and the CCNY Documentary Forum partnered with the Amsterdam News to launch Harlem Focus, a community-based digital media platform. The goal: to provide multi-media journalism training for our students and deepen engagement with the surrounding community of Harlem.

Our students cover people, organizations, events and trends in the community where they live and attend school, focusing on stories that, all too often, the mainstream media ignores. We combine supervised digital age journalism, community relations and engagement, social media, video storytelling and current affairs for an enhanced learning experience CCNY students cannot get elsewhere. We also encourage community "citizen" and CCNY alumni journalists to create content, contribute to the site and share their own stories in the form of personal narratives.

Most recently, film/video students, supervised by Emmy Award-winning CCNY professor Dave Davidson, launched a series of mini-documentaries that tell untold and undertold stories through the lens of Harlem.
