Honors Program in Legal Studies at the Colin Powell School

Jump-Start Your Legal Career

 

Established in August 2008, the Skadden, Arps Honors Program is a unique partnership between Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP—one of the preeminent law firms in the world—and The City College of New York that prepares students from low-income and underrepresented groups for successful legal careers and to enrich and diversify the legal profession.

The Program accepts rising juniors (students who have completed approximately 50 to 70 credits), and offers merit scholarships, mentoring opportunities, summer internship at a law firm or legal services non-profit, a legal studies curriculum, designed to complement a wide range of majors, and LSAT preparation and tutoring.

Students are selected through a competitive application process.

The application deadline is March 15.

WHO ARE HONORS PROGRAM IN LEGAL STUDIES SCHOLARS ?

Intellectually Curious: Our students meet and learn from legal scholars; engage in extensive legal research and writing projects and publish their academic work in scholarly journals.


Civically Engaged: Our students volunteer with advocacy groups on and off campus.


Active: Our students intern in a variety of legal organizations, private law firms and government offices.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE ?
 

City College or transfer students interested in pursuing a law degree who have a strong academic record as assessed by GPA, personal statement and letters of recommendation. Students should have roughly 40 to 65 credits at the time they apply.

WHEN SHOULD I APPLY ?
Students apply to our traditional two-year program by March 15 of their sophomore year, and if accepted, participate in the program during their junior and senior years. The program requires a commitment of two years, including the summer institute and the summer internship.

Students with less than 3 semesters before graduation can apply to our one-year program. The application by October 31.

The Student’s Commitment

■  Skadden Scholars are required to make a two-year commitment to the program.

■  Attend a summer institute designed to strengthen basic and critical thinking skills
    and to introduce students to the legal profession.

■  Complete the legal studies curriculum, designed to complement a wide range of
    majors, and to provide students with an advanced understanding of the
    legal system and its role in US society.

■  Take the LSAT exam on a date specified by the program.

Application Submission

The regular deadline to submit your application is March 15. The early decision deadline is January 06.
We encourage you to download the application and review the instructions for submission. Once you submit the online application, please notify our office ( jlight@ccny.cuny.edu ) so that we know to look for your application.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR TWO YEAR PROGRAM

The Honors Program in Legal Studies is looking for students who:

  • Have at least 3 semesters left at CCNY when applying to the program,
     
  • Have a minimum GPA of  3.3 and strong writing and critical thinking skills,
     
  • Demonstrate a strong desire to go to law school
     
  • Exhibit maturity and self-discipline.
ONE YEAR PROGRAM FOR CURRENT JUNIORS

Are you a high achieving junior contemplating law school? Our one-year program may be for you! It includes free LSAT prep, advising, law school application support and more.
Applicants to the one year program should have minimum of two semesters remaining at CCNY and have at least a 3.3. cumulative GPA.

Application deadline is October 31.
