Crafting your personal narrative deepens your understanding of yourself and elucidates your deepest values, motives, and formative experiences. Where can a social justice media activist from the Bronx, a theologian turned LGBTQ+ advocate and nonprofit leader, a former Congressional Black Caucus fellow, and a passionate student activist meet to develop and grow as leaders of social change? The recipients of the Spring 2021 Changemaker Scholarship, Ameera Badamasi and Tiarra Dickens, created projects that aim to destigmatize menstrual education in Ghana and promote women-led community organizing for environmental justice in Nigeria.   The two scholars worked separately but were driven by a common desire to empower African women experiencing marginalization and threats to their human rights. On April 5, the MPA Program hosted a presentation and discussion led by alumna Eden Mulate (MPA ’18) titled Race Conscious Data Work: How Our Work Benefits from a Racially Aware Approach to Data. The topic grew out of the intersection of Mulate’s work as a racial justice advocate and her career as an analyst at the NYC Office of Management and Budget (OMB).  Mulate's presentation opened with an analysis of the historical stages of systems of racist oppression in the United States. This week the MPA Program hosted a workshop led by Julbert Abraham, an experienced consultant who teaches organizations and individuals to optimize their use of Linkedin. Abraham, known as "The Linkedin Guy", began the workshop by surveying the students on the frequency, purpose, and nature of their use of the online professional networking platform. Abraham then taught students how to build compelling and complete profiles, and he offered live analysis and feedback on several participants' profiles. The… Read More »



Connecting to the community is one of the four pillars of the MPA program's work. This week, Executive Director Bobby Derival spoke on WHCR 90.3 FM Radio, The Voice of Harlem, as a featured guest on the program From City to the World hosted by CCNY President Vincent Boudreau. MPA students Stanley Azuakola, Destini Hornbuckle, Tarik Fathallah, and Kanto Rasedoara completed projects in the fall semester aimed at solving issues related to poverty and inequality in the US and globally.  The projects marked the culmination of the year-long Social Innovation Fellowship offered by the MPA Program, which provided the fellows with two semesters of financial support as well as ongoing mentorship by Professor Fatima Ashraf, a long-time MPA faculty member.  Creating Policies for a Future Workplace that… Read More »



In the MPA Program’s Fall 2020 Workshop Series, students developed their personal narratives, identified their strengths, and explored their potential roles in the social change ecosystem.
