What is OER?

“Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning and research materials in any medium that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and redistribution by others.” -UNESCO, adapted by Creative Commons

  • Free in terms of usage rights and ownership

How do I convert my course into OER?

  • By creating and publishing course materials on CUNY Academic Works under Creative Commons (CC) license (your course materials include but they are not limited to lesson plans, instructional videos, handouts, exercises, tests…)
  • And/or by adopting the existing public domain material available in repositories listed below:
  1. Openstax
  2. Open Textbook Library
  3. SUNY Open Textbooks
  4. Merlot
  5. Mason OER Metafinder
  6. DOAB
  7. OASIS

What is ZTC?

ZTC stands for Zero Textbook Cost. The designation refers to courses that: 

  • Do not require students to purchase a textbook.*
  • Use materials provided at no cost by the instructor (e.g., journal articles downloaded from a CCNY library database and shared with students on Blackboard).

*ZTC designated courses may include costs for supplies.

How do I make my course materials ADA compliant?

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities.

Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities by
higher education institutions which must provide access to all programs and services offered.
