The Townsend Harris Society

We invite you to join the thousands of individuals who have made The City College of New York a priority in their charitable giving. You can be part of the leaders who will build City College for the next generation by making a gift, renewable each year, that qualifies you for the Townsend Harris Society.

Your philanthropy to City College each year is crucial to delivering the mission of the institution. It gives us the ability to meet our immediate needs, respond to emerging opportunities, and excel.

Support from members of the Townsend Harris Society allows City College to remain true to our founding mission of providing a world-class education to any student with the academic potential and inner drive. Your commitment allows us to recruit and retain the best and brightest students through merit-based scholarships and opportunity funds. It also enables us to attract talented faculty who undertake innovative research and launch academic programs that make our educational experience unparalleled. Your generosity gives us the ability to make crucial investments needed to maintain our reputation as “Harvard-on-the-Hudson.”

Join the Townsend Harris Society by making a gift today and help City College students and faculty fulfill their academic promise.

Fund for Excellence

The Fund for Excellence enables City College to undertake a variety of initiatives under the guidance of the Presiden't Office. For example, it allows City College to offer admission to the most qualified students, regardless of their financial circumstances. Your recurrent gift also helps us to attract and foster exceptional educators by giving them the tools to further advance their field through innovative research and to strengthen academic and student programs. The Fund for Excellence may also be used to invest in infrastructure, such as needed renovations and constructions, and to outfit our classrooms and laboratories with the latest equipment optimizing the learning experience for our students.

About The Townsend Harris Society

The City College of New York was originally founded as the Free Academy of the City of New York in 1847 by businessman and president of the Board of Education, Townsend Harris. Named in his honor, the Townsend Harris Society is comprised of generous supporters to City College who make significant gifts to the institution each year. Members have exclusive opportunities to engage with the school and participate by invitation only events. Depending on your level of involvement, you may gain access to some of the following benefits:

  • Insider's e-newsletter
  • Recognition at university events
  • Invitations to exclusive City College events and networking opportunities, based on giving level
  • Honoring an individual or organization through a named scholarship or fellowship, based on giving level
Gifts at all levels make an immediate impact. However, gifts of $1000 or more will receive membership in the Townsend Harris Society and corresponding benefits. Young alumni (classes within the last 10 years) will be eligible with gifts at $500 or more.
