About the facility
The SCIEX QTRAP 4000 is a hybrid mass spectrometry system that merges the precise quantitative power of a triple quadrupole with the qualitative structural identification of a linear ion trap (LIT). Operating across a wide mass range of 5 to 2,800 m/z, it features a Turbo V ion source that accommodates diverse liquid chromatography flow rates using both electrospray ionization (ESI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI). The system's unique dual-functionality allows it to perform conventional multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) scans for high-sensitivity target quantitation, while rapidly switching to full-scan tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS and MS) to characterize unknown compounds or confirm molecular structures in a single analytical run. Because of this versatility, the QTRAP 4000 is widely applied in drug discovery and development for metabolite identification and pharmacokinetics, food safety and environmental testing for trace contaminant screening, and proteomic research for mapping post-translational modifications (PTMs) and validating biomarkers.
The instrument is currently under the auspices of the CCNY Chemistry Department, serving as a core resource for advanced analytical projects. All potential internal and external users are encouraged to contact Dr. Jans to evaluate project fit, discuss user fees, and arrange training or scheduling.
