40-hour HAZWOPER

Hazardaous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) is considered by far the most essential certification in the environment consulting industry. 
 
This course includes the following: 
- Clean-up operations at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites
- Corrective actions involving clean-up operations at sites covered by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976
- Voluntary clean-up operations at sites recognized by federal, state, local, or other governmental body as uncontrolled hazardous waste sites
- Operations involving hazardous wastes that are conducted at treatment, storage, and disposal factilities
- Emergency response operations for releases of hazardous substances regardless of the location of the hazard
 
The 40-hour HAZWOPER training is a collaborative program between CCNY faculty (OSHA-authorized trainer for construction and general industry, Dr. Angelo Lampousis of the CCNY Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences) and faculty from the New York University's College of Global Public Health (Dr. Jack Caravanos, Clinical Professor of Environmental Public Health Services, and Mr. Andrew Burgie). It is part of the worker training porgram funded by the national institute of environmental health sciences through the consortium of the New Jersey and New York Hazardous Materials Worker Training Center. This consortium operates under the Rutgers School of Public Health. 

40-Hour HAZWOPER Course

The City College of New York, Office of Continuing and Professional Studies and the Division of Sciences is offering 40 Professional Development Hours certified by The Practicing Institute of Engineering, Inc. HAZWOPER is considered by far the most essential certification in the environmental consulting industry. 

OSHA's HAZWOPER standard applies to employees who are engaged in:

  1. clean-up operations at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites,
     
  2. corrective actions involving clean-up operations at sites covered by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976,
     
  3. voluntary clean-up operations at sites recognized by federal, state, local, or other governmental body as uncontrolled hazardous waste sites,
     
  4. operations involving hazardous wastes that are conducted attreatment, storage, and disposal facilities, and
     
  5. emergency response operations for releases of hazardous substances regardless of the location of the hazard.
