Associate Professor Victoria Frye and Assistant Professor Tashuna Albritton, of the department of Community Health and Social Medicine, have been awarded funds by the French-American Cultural Exchange in Education and the Arts (FACE) Foundation to conduct HIV prevention research with colleagues in Paris, France. The grant supports an exchange between France- and United States-based researchers, building upon experiences in and perspectives on the design and evaluation of HIV prevention interventions for heterosexual, migrant populations in urban areas of high-income countries. The US-based team will work with Dr. Anne Gosselin, scientific coordinator at the Institut Pierre Louis d'Epidémiologie et de Santé Publique (IPLESP/INSERM) Social Epidemiology Department (ERES), in Paris. The project, entitled “Empowerment-based HIV prevention interventions: Exploring tensions in research implementation and identifying best practices,” analyzes how, in a disempowering social context, migrant communities experience participatory HIV prevention research. In addition, it examines how racialized relations among actors unfold within such research projects. Results will inform the design and conduct of community-led programming to reduce the negative impact of HIV on highly affected communities in both the United States and France.
