This is a six-week experience with both inpatient and ambulatory psychiatry components, exposing students to the diverse clinical problems and diagnoses of ambulatory and hospitalized psychiatric patients. Students will complete the rotation at one of the following sites: Saint Barnabas Hospital Health System (Bronx, NY), Staten Island University Hospital (Staten Island, NY).


Psychiatry Clerkship Learning Objectives:

  • Obtain an accurate and thorough psychiatric interview

  • Perform an accurate and thorough mental status examination

  • Identify appropriate diagnostic tests and procedures in the evaluation of patients with psychiatric conditions.

  • Use the data from the psychiatric interview, mental status examination to formulate a differential diagnosis for patients with psychiatric conditions

  • Complete a write up that includes clinical information from the psychiatric interview and mental examination, a differential diagnosis, and appropriate initial treatment plan               

  • Identify an appropriate approach to evaluating, diagnosing and treating patients with psychiatric  conditions

  • Engage in self-directed learning.

  • Respond appropriately to feedback

  • Prepare effective patient write-up

  • Deliver effective oral presentation

  • Work effectively and collaboratively with other members of the health care team

  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with patients and their families across a broad range of socioeconomic and cultural backgroud

  • Demonstrate respect and compassion in the care of all patients

  • Demonstrate honesty and integrity in all professional activities

  • Describe the resources in the health care setting and in the community that would provide optimal care for patients

  • Recognize approaches to collaborative and team-based care for patients

  • Recognize the impact of social determinants of health on an individual patient
