Student Records Access Policy

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of student education records.  To be in compliance, access is limited to college officials with a “legitimate educational interest.”  A college official has a legitimate educational interest in obtaining access to a particular record if access is reasonably necessary in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility for the University.  The regulation requires that postsecondary institutions use “reasonable methods” to ensure that college officials obtain access to “only” those education records in which they have “legitimate” educational interest.

Therefore, any requests for data or any requests to access students records in CUNYfirst must be submitted for approval at  oar@ccny.cuny.edu
