To highlight the work of our students, CUNY Med is excited to announce our CUNY Med Student Spotlights. Each month we will select one student to profile and showcase their excellent work and accomplishments in our program. This month, the CUNY Med Student Spotlight shines on M1 student Edouard "Eddie" Augustin. Eddie's passion for athletics and witnessing close family members suffer from chronic illnesses led him to study health, fitness, and nutrition. His interest in health led him to study medicine. To Eddie, studying medicine is an opportunity to have a well-paying job while doing meaningful work that positively impacts his community.
"I chose the Sophie Davis BS/MD program because I was attracted to the accelerated nature of the program and the diversity of the student body," Eddie explained. Eddie was searching for a program that focused on medicine from the start and would push him to become a great doctor. "The mission of Sophie Davis is to serve underserved communities. This showed me that Sophie Davis/CUNY Med would help me become a well-rounded doctor who stays involved with community service and connected to minority communities."
In March 2020, CUNY Med students and students nationwide transitioned to online learning models due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. CUNY Med students adjusted to attending classes online and connecting with classmates and faculty in a virtual setting. Eddie is one of many CUNY Med students who had to and is still adjusting to our "new normal." "The lockdown was a difficult adjustment for me since I'm a relatively social person who likes to be outside," Eddie said. " As the campus is reopening, I am working on adjusting to the new sense of normal that comes with attending in-person classes and keeping track of the fluctuating hybrid schedule." He added that he found alternative ways to stay in touch with others and stay active at home. "I took up hobbies like meditation, reading, and calisthenics exercising."
When asked to describe his experience at CUNY Med thus far, Eddie explained that he enjoys his time as a student at Sophie Davis and City College. Eddie is enjoying interactions with classmates and experiences in different clubs, fellowships, and campus activities. Eddie is involved in various community service projects and has formed connections with a wide array of people from different backgrounds and perspectives. "It has been hard to make the switch [back to campus] while facing challenges that come with starting the medical school level of the program, but I expect to get more comfortable as the year goes on."
After medical school, Eddie plans on focusing on sports medicine through orthopedic surgery, family medicine, or physiatry. He is keeping an open mind as he continues to learn more about different specialties and gain more clinical experience. Eddie is also interested in getting involved in minority health advocacy and intervention plans and creating educational content focused on instructing others how to maintain healthy lifestyle habits despite limited resources. Congratulations, Eddie, on all your achievements. We are excited to see what your future holds for you.
