Dean's Message

Prompted by the outbreak of COVID-19 all Spring 2020 courses resumed on March 19th by employing distance learning modalities, including online instruction. CCNY's Downtown Center for Worker Education already features numerous hybrid-online and fully online classes each semester. Faculty and staff have taken a leading role in making this temporary transition to fully online and distance learning formats for the Spring term. For the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester, City College will be conducting all teaching and most services at distance, meaning both online and via telephone. Please contact your course instructor for up to date information about your registered Spring 2020 courses. For updates on the status of the college please check periodically CCNY, CUNY and NYC Health websites

Dear City College Downtown-CWE Community,

As you know we are living in an extreme situation and filled with a great deal of fear and anxiety.  Here at the Center we responded very quickly to the impact of the coronavirus on our Spring semester operations.  We were able to move all traditional classes to online and distance learning education. This has been a monumental effort motivated only by our unbroken commitment to serve our students. Our division has been recognized by the College as a model to others.  My thanks to Interim Chair, Prof. Carlos Aguasaco for taking the leadership in training other colleagues, and to all faculty and staff for raising the bar and making this a smooth transition.

We are already working on the summer and fall semesters. The Summer will be as it is right now: online and distance learning.  For the Fall we are prepared to continue classes no matter which direction this health crisis takes us.

All the support services we had before this crisis---therapist, tutors, student affairs, financial aid, admissions, enrollment, advising and IT---are all in place and available to students.  All our committees and staff are working to provide our students the best service and support.  Also, the University has been providing computers and internet service so all students have the opportunity to finish the semester under such extraordinary circumstances.  I am pleased to tell you that our Mission is stronger than ever, and will continue to stay strong.

All the best to you and your families; stay home and stay healthy.

Dear CWE Community,

As you are aware, things are moving extremely fast.

Governor Cuomo has just mandated that 100% of non-essential employees are to stay home. After consultation with President Boudreau we made the decision to close the Center effective tomorrow March 21.

This is a very difficult and sad decision but this situation leaves us no other choice. We have to be in compliance with Governor Cuomo's order so that we minimize risk to our students, faculty and staff.

We have done the hard work transitioning to distance learning and will continue our plan to work online. I think we are well prepared.

Next week we will continue with our virtual meetings.

Please stay inside and remain healthy and safe.

Thanks for your support and understanding.

Dear Students,

As you are aware, things are moving at lightning speed regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.  At CWE we are working diligently to ensure that you are supported and that you continue to receive a first class education now via distance learning.

We are doing everything necessary to transition from face-to-face learning to distance learning as smoothly as possible. We are working around the clock training faculty and creating online options for tutoring. Your faculty will communicate with you via Blackboard, and other online tools as appropriate. We will also provide information to follow for tutoring and counseling services. Please check our website for updates and communicate with your professors and advisors for guidance.

We know this is an anxious time for you, your family as well as ourselves. Our priority is to get you through this pandemic with the same level of quality instruction, services and support that you are used to through distance learning.

Thank you for your patience and for your trust in us as we work through this challenging time. Be reassured that we will get through this as we continue to work together and stay connected.

I hope you stay healthy and safe, jcm
