City College has added a new Cybersecurity course for the 2025-2026 academic year—the AI in Cybersecurity Lab. AI in Cybersecurity Lab This lab-based course offers an in-depth exploration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques in the field of cybersecurity. The Cybersecurity program at City College will play a crucial role in the execution of the $5 million TREAD grant received from the U.S. Department of Education.  The TREAD project, which stands for Translational Research Excellence Across Disciplines, will further City College’s advancement to the “R1” level of a doctoral university with very high research activity, as defined by Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. In October 2023 the City College Cybersecurity M.S. Program was awarded its designation as one of the National Security Agency’s Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense.  This is the first program in the CUNY system to receive such a designation.  This designation is a recognition of the rigorous academic standards of the program and demonstrates that the program curriculum was vetted and put through a stringent validation process. The City College Cybersecurity M.S. In its debut at the NYU Tandon CSAW AI vs. Humans Challenge, a team from City College came first amongst competitors in the United States – Canada region.   The competition is designed to mimic real-world scenarios where an attacker can opt to attempt anything from altering a chip’s functionality to causing denial-of-service attacks, and the finals for the event took place in November 2022. Dr. Rosario Gennaro, Cybersecurity Program Co-Director and Professor of Computer Science, is the recipient of an $850,000 grant to further City College’s contributions to the advancement of blockchain systems over a five-year period. The funding is part of a $5.75 million grant from the Algorand Foundation to a Yale University-led consortium. The Foundation is the charitable arm of blockchain company Algorand, founded in 2017 by Silvio Micali of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Read the full story here.
