The Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP)
HISTORY AND MISSION STATEMENT
The Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP) has been recognized as a national effort to encourage minority students to consider a career in the fields of science and medicine. Founded at Weill Cornell Medical College in the late ’80s, the HPREP now exists at universities throughout the country, including at the CUNY School of Medicine (CSOM)/Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program.
In the fall of 2014, through the diligent work of Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program student Sarin Abiola Soyemi, HPREP was established at the CSOM. Encouraged by CUNY’s diversity, she was inspired to provide an opportunity for CSOM students to mentor high school students who aspire to work in the healthcare professions. Our mission is to empower students to see themselves as exceptional, equipped, and highly capable while creating opportunities for medical students to serve as leaders in their community. HPREP provides high school students with the opportunity to explore various healthcare professions through the Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program/CUNY School of Medicine, including becoming a doctor or physician assistant. The mission of the HPREP focuses on serving minority students from underserved communities gain exposure to a variety of different professions in healthcare.
As a participant in the CUNY School of Medicine HPREP, students are introduced to various healthcare professions through guest speakers and other activities. The sessions are held at the Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program/CUNY School of Medicine located at the City College of New York.
HPREP students will be able to engage in activities such as:
- Visits to the Gross Anatomy Lab, a unique experience for students to learn about Anatomy by examining cadavers
- Clinical skills training such as blood pressure measurement and problem-based learning (PBL) workshops
- Medical lectures provided by Sophie Davis /CSOM students, faculty and staff members
- Network with the Sophie Davis/CUNY School of Medicine community and gain knowledge about the admissions process
Here, students are enriched by the presentations in medicine as they interact with physicians and current medical school students. The goal is to prepare each student with the necessary knowledge, insight, and experience that will support their decision making regarding their future career. We strongly encourage them to consider a career in the fields of science, medicine, and/or traditional research.
