Profile
Anthony Bear Brown is an assistant professor of political science at the City College of New York in the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership. His work bridges American politics and political theory, with a particular emphasis on populism and democratic resilience. Drawing on both conventional political theory and modern empirical methods, Dr. Bear’s research distinguishes forms of political behavior and rhetoric that foster democratic renewal from those that contribute to democratic erosion and ossification. His dissertation advanced a clarified conceptual definition of populism, examined the scope and contours of anti-elite rhetoric in congressional elections, and developed new empirical approaches to identifying illiberal rhetoric in the United States.
In the classroom, Dr. Bear fosters robust, discussion-driven learning environments grounded in open inquiry and intellectual respect. His courses emphasize synthesizing and analyzing complex arguments rather than rote memorization, and he encourages students to engage one another through thoughtful, evidence-based dialogue.
