Rene Aubry, who joined the MPA faculty in the fall of 2017, teaches students how to grow startup ventures that address the social issues they are most passionate about. In his course on social enterprise, students find their authentic leadership style and explore how their own story can be their guiding narrative. The MPA Program, with generous support from the Charles Rangel Center, hosted a 1.5-hour evening workshop on how to build a professional network. The workshop was led by Marcos Salazar, founder of Be Social Change, one of New York City's largest networks of social impact professionals. After graduating from the MPA Program in 2015, Kieshorne Dennie combined his legal studies background with his training in public administration to land a job at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. Driven by his passion for criminal justice issues, Kieshorne has applied his skills in quantitative research, grant management, and policy evaluation to a variety of policy initiatives and other projects. While earning his MPA and working full-time in city government, second-year student Jashawn Frederick organized a GoFundMe campaign to help underprivileged children of color in the Bronx see Marvel's Black Panther movie. "With the strong belief in the power of positive representation, the goal of this campaign is to help black and brown children see themselves on the big screen," Jashawn said. Steven Molinari, a current MPA student, won a competitive paid internship as a policy analyst in the State Assembly. He will spend his final spring semester working to make state education policy more inclusive of people with disabilities, while gaining an insider's view of state policymaking and participating in a semester-long policy seminar. Social impact bonds, water fund, and private-public partnership under consideration to address deforestation, storm runoff, and other impacts of climate change. Public administration master’s degree students Abubakar Usman, Elizabeth Sowunmi, and Nikita Voevodin are working with The Nature Conservancy and the City of Hudson, New York to identify community resources most at risk from climate change. Irene Castro, MPA 2012, was selected for the Sonia & Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program. She will spend the summer working with the Honorable Joanne Quinones in the NYC Criminal Court in Borough Hall. Rangel Center along with the Cohen Library's Archives and Special Collections Division have mounted an exhibit of Congressional documents and papers associated with the founding of the Congressional Black Caucus and the creation of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. The material is from the Charles B. Rangel Archives at the City College of New York. The MPA program and the Zahn Center for Innovation of the City College Fund announced in February a new cirriculum track in social entrepreneurship and innovation for master's degree students. Participants will complete graduate courses, mentor with some of the most innovative social enterprises in New York City, and compete in the Zahn Center's annual innovation competitions. They will also earn scholarships provided with generous support from the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service. The MPA program appointed its first four social innovation fellows in January.
