Applied Psychology Internship: Human Resources

This organization has been a champion for NYC’s most vulnerable children and families for several decades. It provides children and families the support they need to overcome adversity and thrive. Their outcome-driven behavioral, mental health, and education services propel struggling children forward, away from the ill-effects of poverty and racism, toward a future limited only by scope of their dreams. Students will take the skills she or he has acquired in school, related to his or her particular areas of interest, and apply them in a professional setting.

Gain Training / Experience in:

  • Steps in the recruiting and hiring process including posting job openings, reviewing resumes, conducting telephone and in person interviews, making job offers, and negotiating starting salaries.
  • The importance of employment law and compliance, especially regarding employment eligibility, confidentiality, proper maintenance of employee files, and forms management.
  • The interrelationship of HR and Finance in the areas of new employee paperwork and payroll issues.
  • Tasks related to onboarding and termination, employee file maintenance, and report generation.

Desired Abilities and Experience:

  • Current or recent enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in Human Resources, or non-profit management/administrative fields.
  • Strong researching skills with the ability to effectively organize and present research.    
  • Familiarity with and experience using Microsoft Office and internet applications.
  • Student Member of SHRM is a plus.
  • PowerPoint skills are a plus.
  • Experience using Microsoft Visio is a plus.
  • Excel skills are a plus.

Responsibilities / Learning Objectives:

  • The HR Intern’s responsibilities will be project based. The intern’s key role in the various projects is to research and/or review the necessary information and provide brief written and/or visual summaries via Microsoft applications.  
  • Assist with light office work and clerical tasks which includes, but not limited to, answering the telephone, making copies, and scheduling appointments.
  • Gain an understanding of the role that Human Resources can play in a non-profit setting.
  • Become prepared to work in the arena of human resources and the nonprofit sector.
  • Experience opportunities to see how the organization is maintained.

This internship is located near the Duke Ellington Circle.

The intern must be available at least 14 hours per week. This is an unpaid opportunity. (FOR CREDIT ONLY)
