Fellowship Elements
Vocation, Career & Self-Development Course (Fall Semester)
An applicant’s fellowship status is only deemed ‘official’ after registering for/participating in this course. It is a weekly Professional Development class providing instruction in areas such as resume writing, interview techniques and internship strategies. Fellows are enrolled in this class as an 'elective' in the Colin Powell School, which carries 3 credits towards graduation in all schools and divisions at the City College. Lavie Margolin, the program officer of the S Jay Levy Fellowship, and Layana Abu Touq, the program coordinator, are the instructors for the course. It takes place on Thursdays (5 – 7:00pm)
Ethics in the Workplace Course (Spring semester)
All Fellows are expected to register for this course in the Spring semester. It is a weekly Professional Ethics class providing Fellows with basic training in professional ethics as well as the opportunity to meet executives from a variety of industries to discuss real-world on-the-job ethical dilemmas. Fellows will be enrolled in this class as an 'elective' in the Colin Powell School, which carries 3 credits towards graduation in all schools and divisions at the City College. The instructor for the course is Carlo Invernizzi Accetti, the Executive Director of the program. It takes place on Tuesdays (5 – 7.30pm)
Industry Mentorship (yearlong)
Each Fellow os assigned an industry mentor that best matches his/her major and career pursuits. The goal is to establish a personal mentor/mentee relationship that will offer guidance and support for fellows in defining and working towards their career goals throughout the duration of the Fellowship program. Fellows are required to engage with their mentors in at least three formal meetings over the Fall semester. These may occur as a variation of small group and one-on-one meetings. Following the three formal meetings, fellows are then encouraged (but not required) to continue to engage with their mentors in email correspondence, remote meetings and potentially future follow-up meetings.
Peer Mentorship (yearlong)
The S Jay Levy Alumni Board has established a Peer Mentoring program, which is meant to function in tandem with the Industry Mentorship program but is only joined on a voluntary basis. Peer mentors are S Jay Levy Fellowship Alumni who have made themselves available to help current fellows maximize the benefits of the fellowship and fulfill their career goals. Meetings between them are facilitated by the S Jay Levy Alumni Board, with the help of the S Jay Levy Alumni and Mentorship Coordinator. The goal is to promote networking between cohorts of Fellows and create a sense of community between them.
Summer Internship (June - August)
S Jay Levy Fellows participate in a summer internship or research experience (relevant to their academic major or career interests) for a duration of 280 hours over the months of June-August (or as early as the last week of May). While participating in the internship, Fellows provide a bi-weekly timesheet (signed by their supervisor) to the Program Officer, complete surveys and provide a final report.
