Online Advanced Certificates in Students with Disabilities

Grades 1-6 OR Grades 7-12

FOR CURRENTLY CERTIFIED NEW YORK STATE CLASSROOM TEACHERS

  • Add a New York State Certification in Special Education to your current list of credentials
  • Learn how to apply current evidence-based practices in inclusive and self-contained learning environments
  • Four to six courses (12-18 credits), depending on courses previously taken
  • One-year program with all courses completed FULLY ONLINE
  • Access to a computer and the Internet is required
  • Program begins June 4, 2018
  • Applicants must be committed to the full year course of study online
  • Each course includes 15 hours of fieldwork, with the exception of the practicum (60 hours)
  • For certification: Pass the CST-Multi-Subject (Gr. 1-6 or Gr. 7-12) and CST-Students with Disabilities exams at the conclusion of the program

JUNE 2018:
- SPED 3900K (for Grades 1-6) Differentiated Instruction & Assessment for Students with Disabilities in Childhood Education II (15 hrs. of fieldwork)
 
JULY 2018 (if needed):
- SPED 5000K Introduction to Inclusive Education (15 hrs. of fieldwork)
 
FALL 2018:
- SPED 5300K Positive Approaches to Challenging Behaviors by Students w/ Disabilities (15 hrs. of fieldwork)
- SPED 6100I Working with the Parents of Children with Disabilities
 
SPRING 2019:
- SPED 3700K (for Grades 1-6) Reading & Writing Instruction for Students w/ Disabilities in Childhood Ed. II (15 hrs. of fieldwork)
- SPED 5700G Practicum in Teaching Special Education (60 hrs. of fieldwork) – apply with advisor in Fall 2018

- SPED 3901K (for Grades 7-12) Differentiated Instruction & Assessment for Students with Disabilities in Adolescent Education II (15 hrs. of fieldwork)

JULY 2018 (if needed):
- SPED 5000K Introduction to Inclusive Education (15 hrs. of fieldwork)

FALL 2018:
- SPED 5300K Positive Approaches to Challenging Behaviors by Students w/ Disabilities (15 hrs. of fieldwork)

SPRING 2019:
- SPED 3701K (for Grades 7-12) Reading & Writing Instruction for Students w/ Disabilities in Adolescent Ed. II (15 hrs. of fieldwork)
- SPED 5700G Practicum in Teaching Special Education (60 hrs. of fieldwork) – apply with advisor in Fall 2018
 

HOW TO APPLY

  • During the online application process, please upload:
  • Transcripts from all postsecondary schools attended and your résumé
  • Confirmation of registration for the GRE* general test (https://www.ets.org/gre); no minimum score required) and submit your official score report by August 1, 2018. *GRE waived for applicants who hold certification and a master’s degree
  • Evidence of NYSED issued certification as a teacher or other appropriate certification
  • Three letters of reference (professional or academic)
  • Application fee of $125.00 (check or money order payable to the City College Office of the Bursar)
