City College Honors Program

The City College Honors Program offers selected, high-achieving students in all disciplines a particularly challenging academic program in small classes. The curricular center of the program is the Honors Liberal Arts core, an enhanced and enriched version of the required core that includes interdisciplinary courses in the humanities, sciences and social sciences. It provides an excellent academic base regardless of a student's eventual specialization. Small classes are taught by outstanding faculty, who encourage student participation and rigorous study. Students in the City College Honors Program receive:

  •  General Education courses that offer exceptional intellectual challenges and rewards
  •  Intensive mentoring and advisement from faculty and dedicated honors advisors
  •  First-day registration privileges
Eligibility

Entering first-year students must have a high school average of at least 88% and appropriate performance on the standardized tests, SAT or ACT. Students in any major may be accepted into the Honors Program. Students accepted into both the Honors Program and the Sophie Davis School for Biomedical Education B.S./M.D. program (which requires a special application) cannot enroll in both programs, but must select one. For the class admitted fall 2013 (Class of 2017), the average high school G.P.A. was 93.7 (on a scale of 100) and the average SAT (math and verbal) was 1314.

Admission

New first-year students will be considered for the program if they have applied to the Macaulay Honors College at the City College. Students need not submit a regular CUNY admissions application but apply directly to the Macaulay Honors College.

A very small number of incoming transfer and continuing students may be admitted to the program at the discretion of the director.  To be considered these students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher and should have at least five general education (core) course requirements remaining, depending on their majors.  Transfer students must have applied for admission to City College (using the CUNY application form) and submitted the City College scholarship application. Continuing and transfer students are considered for spring admission. They should submit a Continuing Student Application.

Requirements

Students in the City College Honors Program complete their general education (core) requirements in honors core courses.  All students entering fall 2007 semester (except B.A. students) in the City College Honors Program take at least five honors core courses. Additional required courses vary depending on the student's degree objective

Retention Criteria

Retention in the honors program requires full-time status and a cumulative 3.0 G.P.A. Upon successful completion of the honors program, the designation “Liberal Arts Honors” is entered on the student’s transcript.
