High Velocity Gas Gun – Ballistic Testing
The laboratory operates a high-velocity gas gun system, originally developed with components from Physics Applications Inc., capable of launching projectiles at velocities up to 430 m/s. The system utilizes a dual-diaphragm configuration with an intermediate pressurized cavity to achieve rapid gas release and precise pressure control. This design enables consistent and repeatable high-speed impact conditions. The apparatus is used to investigate material behavior under extreme strain rates, including penetration, fracture, and dynamic failure of metals, composites, and protective structures.
