Participants from March ‘Waterproofing New York’ conference return to CCNY to re-imagine five vital urban infrastructure systems
In March, municipal leaders, scientists, engineers and designers met at The City College of New York for “Waterproofing New York,” a conference that explored the impact of past and future storms on five vital infrastructure systems. “Beyond Waterproofing,” a sequel to that event, presents the designer-participants approaches to re-imagining New York’s water/waste, power/data, circulation/fuel, parks/recreation and shelter infrastructure systems.
The program takes place 5 – 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 10, Room 107, Spitzer School of Architure, 141 Convent Ave., New York, and is free and open to the public.
Presenting speakers, all of whom participated in the March event, will be:
• Deborah Gans, professor, Pratt Institute School of Architecture;
• Denise Hoffman-Brandt, associate professor and director of the Landscape Architecture Program, Spitzer School of Architecture, The City College of New York;
• Lydia Kallipoliti, assistant adjunct professor, Cooper Union, Columbia University;
• Kate Orff, assistant professor of architecture and urban design and co-director of the Urban Landscape Laboratory, Columbia University;
• Chris Reed, associate adjunct professor of landscape architecture, Harvard Graduate School of Design;
• Miguel Robles Duran, assistant professor of urbanism, School of Design Strategies, Parsons The New School for Design;
• Hilary Sample, associate professor, Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation;
• Catherine Seavitt Nordenson, associate professor of landscape architecture, Spitzer School of Architecture, The City College of New York;
• Michael Sorkin, distinguished professor and director, Graduate Program in Urban Design, Spitzer School of Architecture, The City College of New York;
• Gullivar Shepard, associate principal, Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, and
• Georgeen Theodore, associate professor and director of the infrastructure planning program, New Jersey Institute of Technology School of Architecture.
The program is presented by the Spitzer School of Architecture Landscape Architecture Program, with support from the Municipal Art Society, American Society of Landscape Architects New York chapter and the Institute for Urban Design.
