City College Students Garner 7 Awards at CSTEP Conference

Seven out of ten students from the City College Academy for Professional Preparation (CCAPP) who presented at New York State CSTEP Student Conference won awards in their categories, the most among the 49 participating institutions. The conference was held April 11 – 13 in Lake George. CCNY students received three distinguished winner awards and four honorable mentions. 


CCAPP is City College’s CSTEP program, an acronym for Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program. These programs support talented underrepresented students pursuing professional licensure and careers in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines.

At City College, CCAPP offers: a summer program for entering students, academic support and enrichment activities, professional and career development, mentoring and academic workshops and seminars.

Violeta Contreras-Ramirez, honorable mention, biology poster presentation; City College Professor of Biology Jonathan Levitt, mentor.

Rosmery Rodriguez, honorable mention in medicine, immunology and virology poster presentation; Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education Assistant Medical Professor Andre Ragnauth, mentor.

Giselle Gonzalez, distinguished winner, medicine, immunology and virology poster presentation; City College Professor of Biology Jerry Guyden and Senior Postdoctoral Fellow Mike Samms, mentors.

Yasiri Portorreal, distinguished winner, natural sciences oral presentation; Dr. Thomas Reiner (PhD), Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, mentor.

Michelle Henderson, honorable mention in zoology, ecology and public health poster presentation; Stephen Gould, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, mentor.

Qiangmei Chen, honorable mention in physics, mathematics and material science poster presentation; Dr. Adriana Espinosa, deputy director, City College Public Service Management Program, and City College Professor of Mathematics Jay Jorgenson, mentors.

Cyndi Gonzalez, presented in biology poster presentation; City College Professor of Biology Jonathan Levitt, mentor.

Maxime Montour, presented in biology poster presentation; Dr. Kristen Taylor, postdoctoral fellow in pathology and anatomical sciences, University of Missouri, mentor.

Sahista Kapadia, presented in physical sciences oral presentation; City College Associate Professor of Chemistry George John, mentor.
