CCNY Conference Offers Ideas to Spur Economic Recovery

Four prominent economists and financial experts will come to The City College of New York March 31 to present ideas about the economic recovery and possible scenarios.  “The Way Out of the Crisis: Fed’s Response, Financial Impact and Effects on the Main Street Economy,” a conference hosted by CCNY’s Department of Economics and Business, will run 12 noon to 3 p.m. in Steinman Hall auditorium, located at the corner of Convent Avenue and St. Nicholas Terrace, New York.

City College has brought together several noted experts to analyze the current situation and offer solutions to boost the economic recovery efforts, said Dr. Joseph Berechman, chair of the economics and business department.

“We’ve provided them with a platform to discuss, explore and rethink the main strategies to continue with the economic recovery from what has become the second deepest economic crisis in the United States since the Great Depression.  The key objective is to analyze various possible scenarios for the key economic developments ahead that will shape the financial markets and the real economy in the coming years.”

The four speakers, who represent the Federal Reserve, Wall Street and academia, are:

Melissa Brady, a vice president with Houlihan Lokey, an international advisory-focused investment bank, who will discuss the state of the debt market.

Paul Bennett, visiting professor of finance and economics, Rutgers University, and former chief economist of the New York Stock Exchange, who will discuss the impact of automated order routing and data dissemination on institutional trading in equity and other markets.

Leonardo Leiderman, professor of comparative economics, Tel Aviv University, and chief economic advisor to Bank Hapoalim, Israel, who will discuss the potential impact on financial markets of "eventual normalization of U.S. monetary and fiscal policy.”

Andrea Tambalotti, senior economist, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, who will discuss recent U.S. economic developments and monetary policy.

They will participate in a panel discussion moderated by Professor Berechman on the federal government’s response to the economic crisis.  The focus of that conversation will be strategies and policies implemented to find an early and durable way out of the crisis and synchronization of economic, monetary and fiscal policy.

Professor Leiderman will also deliver the conference luncheon address.  His topic will be “The Outlook for the Global Economy and the Rising Role of Emerging Markets.”
